Well this explains CBS's "fire 2, hire 1" approach earlier this week.

CBS was reportedly hoping to hire Jets' Rex Ryan for 'NFL Today' if he was fired

There are some changes at CBS' "The NFL Today" -- recently retired Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez will join the pregame show, while Dan Marino and Shannon Sharpe are out.

But according to The Big Lead's Jason McIntyre reported, one of the replacements could have been Jets coach Rex Ryan had he not been brought back by the Jets at the end of last season.

"One source said that CBS had been hoping to land Rex Ryan if the Jets had fired their coach," he wrote. "He was a perfect fit for CBS -- proximity to New York, knowledge of the AFC, and his blustery nature."

Anyone who watched "Hard Knocks" -- or, frankly, any of his press conferences -- can vouch he would have been a hit. Jets players were obviously happy to have Ryan back...but who knows what the future holds?
