@RichCimini - Jets announce they've played franchise tag on Nick Folk. #Jets

@RichCimini - Not a surprise that Folk is tagged. Things appeared to be going that way in recent days. First Jet tagged since D. Harris in 2011. #Jets

‏@RichCimini - Franchise tag estimate for kickers is about $3.4 million. Folk made $780,000 last season. Nice raise. #Jets

LOL, and the franchise tag was created in the 90s so star players like Elway and Marino would stay with their teams another year while they negotiated a new contract. :nea:

There are a few things I have realized about Mr. Jet over a few topics.

1) He is a racist. By constantly using race as a battling tool.
2) He is an extreme Liberal. If you are on either extreme you are probabaly more wrong than right.
3) He is one of those people who will never admit fault, error or defeat.
4)His life sucks and he takes it out on people who don't share in his views.

2. Little-known rule: Technically, the Jets couldn't stop Folk from hitting the open market unless they exercised the tag. Here's why: Because they used the minimum-salary benefit last year with Folk, the Jets were allowed to offer only another minimum-salary deal before March 11, the start of free agency. Obviously, that would've been insulting, considering Folk's performance. The two sides could've circumvented the rule, agreeing to a long-term deal and signing it after free agency started, but they apparently didn't get close. The Jets didn't want to take a chance on losing him to another team, so, in essence, they shut down the loophole by tagging him.

@MMehtaNYDN: Official franchise number for kickers in 2014: $3.556M, per @AlbertBreer. So, that's the number for Jets PK Nick Folk, who was tagged #nyj

Good to have Folk back, even at that price. With the cap space we'll have this offseason, I doubt this figure hurts us too much. For how he performed last year, he was underpaid.

Why is that? He is a key FA player and was due for a raise this year. Jets have cap space and can afford to keep him at that price. The tag allows the Jets to maintain exclusive negotiation rights with him so they can still try to extend him without signing him to the tag value. Seems like a win-win to me - Jets keep their kicker, Folk gets paid handsomely next season. Who else were the suppose to use the tag on?

Lots of teams franchise kickers,so they don't lose their kicker and the price isn't that much. The Jets couldn't have re-signed Folk before FA unless he would have accepted a vet minimum contract. SO it makes sense to franchise him to make sure he isn't going anywhere.

No to keep piling on but.......
It makes 100% sense to me. He would have made $3million plus in FA. We tagged him for $3.3. Resigning him would not have been cheaper. We also get to ensure he will be here. Not to mention the CBA did not allow us to sign him to anything more than a minimum until after FA started. Seems like a smart move.
