Posted 2 Jan 2015I don't see a reason to draft either in the first round. One has been in a system that made things "easy" for him. The other has had a lot of talent around him and won, but has made a lot of questionable on field/off field decisions.
The drafts have been plagued in recent years with high profile QBs getting drafted and struggling. People hated the Ferguson pick, but I think getting a ten year starter is better than rolling the dice on another Sanchez/Smith/etc. Where you have a lot of needs, you have to make some safe picks.
One of the issues the past few years is the amount of prospect players we drafted, in particular because Ryan clearly isn't able to develop talent. Hill, Smith, Sanchez, Coples and more were all considered to be players who needed polishing. If this team had a few less busts and a few more C+/B- players we'd be better than 4-12.
The problem with avoiding drafting first round QBs is that you absolutely need a QB to win in the NFL. There's no way around it. And considering how over drafted QBs are, it's pretty difficult to get a good one outside the 1st round. I really liked the Ferguson pick...but the Jets haven't won a Super Bowl with him.
Posted 2 Jan 2015Marone didn't bail on his team.
He actually asked the GM for an extension and was told no. He then asked for an extension for his assistants and was again told no. He was only under contract through 2015 & was smart to leave considering there was already tension between himself and the GM. Not to mention, since Buffalo wasn't smart enough to include a clause in the contract, they still have to pay him another 4 million for 2015 on top of whatever he maes elsewhere.
Buffalo has been a team that was improving since he got there, so I don't see why not give him a shot since he's from the Bronx and was with us before. Rex didn't fire him either. Rex allowed him to interview for the Buffalo job because he wanted to see him succeed not to mention he couldn't stop him from interviewing if he wanted to since it was not a lateral move but rather a promotion. That's another little NFL rule.
We need to get our new GM before we get our new HC though. If they can't get along and get ont he same page as to which direction to go in, it's a waste of time for both.
While I'm not anti-Marrone at all. For the sake of clarity, he didn't work under Rex. Marrone was with the Jets under Herm Edwards. Before Buffalo, he was head coach at Syracuse...where he did a really good job at a down-trodden program and produced a few good NFL players in his time.
