About Me
I have a jets memory to share with you guys. It was the last game of 1991 which was the second season Bruce Coslet was our coach and the last year Ken O'Brien was our starting QB. Even though we were 7-8 going into the last game down here in Miami, we would make the playoffs with a win over the Dan Marino led dolphins. The week before, our kicker Pat Leahy was hurt in a game against the Patriots (we lost 6-3. I think). So the team had a couple free agent kickers come in on Monday or Tuesday and as fate would have it, we signed a guy named Raul Allegre. The game against Miami was close throughout but Miami took a 3 point lead with about a minute to play. The jets started the final drive of regulation at roughly their 25 yard line and instead of throwing, O'Brien handed off to Johnny Hector who ran practically into FG position and I believe he made it out of bounds also. (Please excuse some of my info, it was 20 years ago!). The phins defense tightened and the new kicker was asked to send the game into overtime from about 40-45 yards. I was sitting in the front row in the opposite end zone and watched that kick go through with time expiring. I forget who won the coin toss to begin overtime (I think the jets did but....). However, the jets did get the ball and again they used the ground game to get into FG position for Allegre who was home without a job just 5 days before to win the game and he did!
The best part of that day for me was meeting a group of players after the game. I met Chris Burkett, Blair Thomas, Brad Baxter, Jim Sweeney, and Browning Nagle. I was shitfaced drunk but the guys were happy to bullshit with me while celebrating that win. Unfortunately, that turned out to be the highlight of the Bruce Coslet era. They lost in the wild card game to the Houston Oilers and the following season, they went with Nagle as the starting QB. After 3 quarters of lighting up the dome in Atlanta, Nagle turned into one of the least accurate passers the team has ever had. 1992 will be remembered as the year Dennis Byrd got hurt and Al Toon ended his all too short career due to post concussion issues but I will always remember that day in December, 1991 when we beat Miami and took their place in the playoffs!
