Posted 14 Jan 2014We won't have any shot at Watkins. He will go in the top 7. As usual, we won the games we were better off losing. But with the 18th pick we have no shot at Manziel or Bortles who would have been my first choice. We should be able to choose from Evans, Ebron, Amaro, Benjamin, Lee. I like the TE route because there are so many WR's this year and we can also buy one in free agency.
We do need a CB, G, OLB, S. We may be able to get 2 of them in free agency if we have $40 million to start with. If we come out with a WR, G and CB in free agency and we can draft a WR, TE, OLB and S we might just surprise teams next year.
That is if Geno can improve his play dramatically which I'm dubious about.
I am going to try to be nice here . . . If you go back and read my post, you will see that I put "no matter the cost." that was my acknowledging the obvious that Sammy Watkins will go well before 18 and we will need to trade up. Sorry if that phrase wasn't a clear indication of my intentions.
As for Manziel, he isn't a NFL qb. He runs in circles, NFL defenders are too fast for that, and chucks it up in the middle of the field, a cardinal sin for qbs, but he gets away with it because its college and he has 6'5" receivers all over. those are his "highlight plays." He won't do that in the NFL and even if he shows flashes of brilliance, the best he can hope for is a Mike Vick Career where he has one or two flashy years and then the hits accumulate and he cant stay healthy. He is NOT an NFL qb.
As far as drafting a qb in the first round, why? Forget anything to do with Geno Smith for a second and tell me who this rookie 1st rounder would be throwing to? We need weapons, desperately! Kerely is a playmaker in the slot, but when that's all you have it's not hard to take away. Nelson is nice on 3rd downs and red zone but we need a consistent playmaker that can get open and scare D coordinators. RB is solid. Our o-line is fine, they had a whole year to gell and one was a rookie, and our run game isn't bad at all. But none of that matters when other teams stack the box and can play 1-1 coverage without worrying about a thing. We need someone who can move the ball and make plays, hence suggestion to trade up for Sammy Watkins. If Mr. A & M WR fell to 18 that would be great, but even with the depth at wr this year I don't want to take a chance. Watkins has been a beast since his freshman year. Get the guy that runs great routes, has great hands, and can make plays in numerous ways. get him the ball in some way, and he will make the play. That is EXACTLY what we need. Sign a guy like Jeremy Maclin in free agency to compliment that, and we might have something.
But a 1st round pick on a TE would ALMOST be a waste. We need someone on the outsides. Unless we signed two major guys I'd prefer to get a promising outside guy before a TE.
Posted 10 Jan 2014I stopped watching at "Teddy Bridgewater is as polished a quarterback as Andrew Luck." smh . . .
Posted 7 Jan 2014Sammy Watkins, no matter the cost, period.
