Back to the Drawing Board

Drawing BoardThere is only one logical course of action to set this ship back on course. I personally think that team Tangini don’t have what it takes to make this gutsy call, but you never know. This team needs players built for their system, not holdovers from another system. In order for this to happen, the following must take place.

This off-season, trades are a must. For this team to work with Mangini’s plan, we need to get many more players in the draft that fit his scheme.

Offense
We need a major upgrade at LG and RT.
QB - clemens should be the answer.
RB - Jones is good, Leon explosive but is Mcfadden the answer?
WR - Cotchery, Brad smith, Stuckey. could use another WR (coles traded read on for info)
TE - Will anyone step up? Baker shows flashes but will he ever be the man?
Defense
Ellis
- capable, but better if he has playmakers around him.
Kenyon - another free agency mistake?
D-rob - Not a 3-4 DT, should be traded.
The D Line needs a true 3-4 DT and someone that can put pressure on the QB from the ends.
LB’s
Vilma - gone - traded, not a 3-4 LB
Hobson - capable but will probably get more on the open market.
Barton - I would say he was gone, but may stay with Vilma gone and Hobson’s status unknown.
Harris - Monster in the making
Thomas - too much invested, will stay
Secondary
Barrett
- “Toast” - gone
Dyson - gone
Revis - The future
Rhodes - Down year but will bounce back when used properly
Coleman, Smith, Elam - Elam can hit and may be the best of the bunch but that’s not saying much.

Here come the trades…
Vilma if he can be ready for training camp, he will be traded. A move long over-due. How much has his value gone down while playing in the 3-4 and season ending surgery? We’ll find out. If we’re lucky we’ll get a late 1st round pick or early 2nd for him. That’s if we’re lucky and we know the Jets never get lucky except for the Marvin Jones draft day trade.
D-rob - Not sure if he’s tradable either with a big salary. But definitely not a fit at the 3-4 DT. 2nd to 3rd rounder at best.
Barret, Dyson - If we can get anything it will be a 5th - 6th rounder.
Coles - Buyer beware on the damaged goods. If he can come back and finish the year, this is a must trade. Not sure if other teams will bite with his bout with concussions, but it’s worth it. Coles doesn’t have much time left and he could be only one hit away from a career ender. Remember what happened to Toon and Chrebet? They started getting concussions on almost any type of hit, the same will happen to coles which is why we should, must trade him while he has playing time left in his career. The other problem is Coles will want more cash or threaten to hold out on the new team. If we get a 2nd rounder it will be worth it.
Chad - Maybe a fit in Minnesota for a 3rd rounder. If not we keep him as insurance.

If the above can all work out, we’re looking at the following additional picks in this years draft:
2nd round - 2
3rd round - 2
5th round - 1

These additional picks will give Mangini and Tanny everything they need to get the players they want to rebuild this team. It also gives us tons of flexibility in moving around in the draft. We can package picks to move up or trade down and gather a few more picks. With these picks we can address all the areas of need and actually put a competitive team on the field within 2-3 years. A young team that will be together for years to come. We wouldn’t have to overpay for free agents which is what it would take to get players here after a disastrous year. I for one wouldn’t mind waiting if we went with this approach.

All this just in time for our first real home game in decades when we open the new stadium.

  1. What do you mean by Marvin Jones draft day trade? If I remember correctly, we held the 4th pick and picked him. 1992 wasn’t a good year for the jets after squeaking into the playoffs in 91. marvin was the best defensive player on the board in the 93 draft. I think it went 1.Bledsoe, 2.Mirer, 3.??, Jones.

  2. We had the 3rd pick in the draft that year and swapped picks with the Cardinals to the 4th spot getting Johnny Johnson in the deal.

  3. do you remember who the cards picked? Wadsworth? thanks

  4. actually there is no such thing as a Drawing Board its more like an etch a sketch .
it would less painful if we got GM’s and a Coaching staff to match with the personnel we have on hand.

  5. Don’t forget: Today (Nov. 17) is the 39th anniversary of the Heidi game: http://www.failuremag.com/thisday.php

  7. I think Mangini will be fine if we give him enough time to get the players for his system. I believe we need to stick with the 3-4 defense. Maybe we should try to strike a deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers and get Woodley, reuniting him with Harris. How about Chris Long in the draft? He’s played the 3-4 in college and gets consistent pressure on opposing qb’s. I know the sexy pick seems to be McFadden but quality rb’s are easier to come by than top notch defensive lineman, especially in the 3-4. I say keep Hobson, he will be fine in the 3-4, with quality supporting cast at lb’s. We could help our line situation in the 3rd and 4th rounds. I don’t think this team is very far from being a upper echelon in the NFL! We’ve lost a lot of close games, we just need to find that right mix to polish our opponents of in the late stages of games. J-E-T-S! Jets! Jets! Jets!

  8. What about keeping Vilma if he agrees to switch to positions, he would make one hell of a strong safety. That’s just the kind of physical presence we need in the defensive backfield.
